Ladder 7 was dispatched at 11:00 a.m. to a fire near Southeast 82st Avenue and Lambert Street. On the way, the driver-side front wheel fell off.
The driver safely brought the 80,000-lb. truck to a stop on the side of the street. None of the four-man crew was injured. Another vehicle was dispatched to the fire.
The 1-year-old engine cost more than $1 million, according to firefighter Tommy Schroeder.
It was still unclear Friday morning what exactly went wrong.
“Multiple parts in the front independent suspension failed,” Schroeder said.
Portland Fire & Rescue Chief Erin Janssen ordered an immediate inspection of all similar vehicles.
